Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was created to explain a human’s basic needs. All of the
needs are positioned in the shape of a pyramid, with the most important needs listed at
the bottom tier, and the least important is positioned at the top tier. Maslow wanted to
properly explain human behaviors and emphasized that physiological needs must be
met first. The hierarchy of needs listed from most to least importance are:
Physiological needs: Located at the bottom of the pyramid, and the largest tier.
Without these, humans would be unable to survive.
Critical for human survival
• Food
• Water
• Clothing
• Air
• Shelter
• Sleep
Safety needs: Protecting yourself from being harmed, whether it may be physical or
emotional

• personal security
• employment
• resources
• health
• property
Love and belonging needs: Having personal relationships with others, whether
socially or romantically

• friendship
• intimacy
• family
• sense of connection

Esteem needs: desire to be recognized, respected, and personal value
• respect for others
• self-esteem
• status
• recognition
• strength
• freedom
Self-actualization needs: described as reaching your full potential and personal growth
• Morality
• Personal growth
• creativity
