Week 13 Journal Entry 14

Andriy  & Slynchuke has described eleven things Internet users do that may be illegal. Review what the author says and write a paragraph describing the five most serious violations and why you think those offenses are serious.

After reviewing Slynchuk’s blog post on Clario, the five most serious violations are: illegal searches on the internet, collecting information about children under 13, faking an online identity, sharing of someone else’s personal information, and cyberbullying & trolling. Searching on the internet is not a crime; however, if the intent behind the search is to commit something malicious or to break the law. Examples of illegal searches would be searching for CP, acts of terrorism, or accessing the dark web. The collection of information about children under 13 is another very serious offense, because it is done without the parents’ consent, exploits children, and is noncompliant with child privacy laws. Faking an online identity can lead to catfishing other online users and identity theft. Sharing the personal information of someone, such as their address, phone number, and other sensitive information, leads to their safety being threatened, which may be through stalking, harassment, or physical harm. Lastly, cyberbullying is a serious offense because it can affect victims mentally and emotionally.
