Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs outlines five levels of human needs, from basic survival to self-actualization. In terms of technology, the physiological level is met through access to digital resources for sustenance and healthcare information (online conversations/websites full of information). Safety needs are addressed by cybersecurity measures, ensuring online privacy and protection (firewalls/VPNs). Social needs are fulfilled through digital communication platforms, fostering connections (talking to friends on Discord/Skype). Esteem needs manifest in online recognition and validation, such as social media likes (Instagram/TikTok). Lastly, self-actualization is pursued through online education, skill development, and creative expression platforms (Going to school, picking up an instrument/talent, showing off said talent on a streaming service). Digital experiences, thus, intricately align with Maslow’s hierarchy, enriching and sometimes shaping our journey toward fulfilling these fundamental human needs.
