I’m going to start my presentation of with a bit of background information on the concept of smart cities in general. So a smart city is a city uses technology like the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics to improve quality of life, enhance operational efficiency, and create a sustainable urban environment. In the future a lot of first world cities will start to integrate concepts and technologies of smart cities into their urban planning which begs the question, how will cybersecurity be used to secure these new technologically advanced cities? With more data on the internet, cybersecurity specialists have to work even harder to keep the data of these cities and their people protected and in the right hands.

3. The concept of smart cities promise efficiency, sustainability, and convenience. But these promises depend on vast networks of interconnected data and devices which can create more opportunities for criminals, cyber criminals more specifically, to take advantage of the people who live in the city. In order to secure smart cities we need to use strong network security measures like firewalls and data-encryption. Constant monitoring and threat detection needs to also be implemented in order to keep our communities safe online.

4. Nowadays, Cities infrastructure can’t only be planned with things like roads and buildings, they need to incorporate digital architecture and planning as well. Cybersecurity has to be the backbone of these technology forward city designs in order to defend against attacks on infrastructure like online power grids that could disrupt the services that the smart city needs to provide. Similar to how urban planners need to design buildings that can withstand earthquakes, and typhoons, planners must design strong digital infrastructure that can protect against cyber attacks.

5. An example of a cities cybersecurity measures failing, is the Atlanta Ransomware Attack of 2018. In 2018, two Iranian hackers used SamSam ransomware to hack Atlanta’s IT infrastructure and data servers. It caused massive outages and forced the city to shut down all of the other digital services in order to stop it from spreading. At the time, Atlanta was known for having weak Cybersecurity systems in place to defend themselves with and they ended up spending 2.7 million dollars on repairing their systems.

6. Cybersecurity has major social implications in regards to smart cities. If the Cybersecurity in the area is bad, the citizens in that city will constantly have to worry about things going wrong or their data being stolen in a major cyber attack, which now may seem like not a big problem, but as technology is more integrated into urban design, it can become a very big issue. It would be similar to living in an area with bad police presence. You wouldnt feel safe in your own home and you wouldnt trust the people who run the city to protect you. Smart cities and cybersecurity can also have major equity problems. When incorporating technology into a city, you have to make sure that all of the citizens have equal access to the resources that the city can provide.

7. In conclusion, cybersecurity is essential to protecting cities, and keeping citizens safe and trusting in the city officials. Without the proper protection of city-wide tech infrastructure, the development of smart cities will not be possible. The improvement of smart cities and cybersecurity systems go hand in hand.

2.
