Journal Entry Ten: Social Cybersecurity

Lt. Col. Beskow’s article on social cybersecurity describes how cybersecurity is changing. Traditional cybersecurity is protecting a network, or friendly infrastructure, from an enemy organization. An example would be the Student attack of early 2010-2011 where an Iranian enrichment facility was targeted. Social cybersecurity is utilizing the internet to target people, or groups of people. The goal is to sway their opinion to where it aligned with your agenda. Look at how divided our country is now when it comes to politics? If the enemy can makes us turn against ourselves by spreading disinformation, we may destroy ourselves without any shots being fired. The articles goes on to speak on the decentralized nature of the modern information network aka the internet and the multiple social media platforms. Just think about how you get your daily news. Is it from Facebook or Instagram, YouTube or X? None of these sources are vetted or verified before information is posted. We are just as likely to receive fake news as we are to receive legitimate information. This article shows the very real need for a different approach to cybersecurity. One that will specifically target the social sector of cybersecurity.
