Threats change constantly and the judgment calls you make in a real environment are very different from anything a class can prepare you for. Employers are not just looking for people who know the concepts, they want people who have already done the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What it was<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CYSE 368 paired academic reflection with a real placement in a Security Operations Center, which is the team inside an organization responsible for monitoring systems and responding to security incidents. The tools I worked with included CrowdStrike for endpoint detection, IBM QRadar for reviewing security event logs, and PagerDuty for managing alerts. Our workflow moved from alert triage through investigation, verdict, and documentation. At the end of the internship my team put together a group presentation covering our tools, workflow, and key takeaways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest thing I took from this was getting genuinely comfortable with industry tools. Reading about them in class is one thing, using them in a real environment where decisions actually matter is another. I also learned how important clear documentation is because in a SOC, whoever picks up your case next needs to understand exactly what you found and why you made the call you did.<\/p>\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/cyse201sna\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32141\/2026\/05\/Interview-with-Edward-Staff-Interview.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\"  data-toolbar=\"bottom\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"off\">Interview-with-Edward-Staff-Interview<br\/><\/a>\n<p class=\"wp-block-pdfemb-pdf-embedder-viewer\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This paper is from an interview I conducted with Edward Scott, a Sr. Cloud Security Engineer at ODU&#8217;s Information Security Office. The interview focused on how security operations experience connects to more advanced roles in the cybersecurity field and what it takes to grow professionally over time. Edward shared insights on his career path, the technical skills that matter most, and advice on staying proactive in a field that is constantly evolving.
