The org brings together students from East African backgrounds and allies to connect over shared heritage, support each other academically and professionally, and engage with conversations about identity in college and beyond. My responsibilities included running meetings, planning events, representing the organization to the university, and making decisions that actually served the people in the community.

Reflection

Leading SEAD was the most personally meaningful thing I did at ODU. It taught me the difference between doing what you think is best for a community and actually listening to what the community needs. That distinction matters in any leadership role but it hits differently when the community is one you are personally part of. It also shaped how I think about entering the cybersecurity field. I know I will often be one of few people in the room who looks like me, and I see that as a responsibility, not just something to navigate.

This flyer is from an end of year cookout event that I helped facilitate as President of Students of East African Descent. The event was a collaboration between SEAD and four other student organizations on campus, which meant coordinating across multiple groups, aligning on logistics, and making sure the event represented all of the communities involved. Bringing that many organizations together around a shared event required a lot of communication, planning, and relationship building. It was one of the highlights of my time leading SEAD and a reflection of what the organization is really about, bringing people together and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

Why it matters Cybersecurity has a real diversity problem and that matters beyond fairness.
