Instruction: Visit PrivacyRights.org to see the types of publicly available information about data breaches. How might researchers use this information to study breaches?
Response: PrivacyRights.Org is a strong example for a form of archival research (record) that can be studied in Cybersecurity due to its contents relating to data breaches. This digital record (site) can be useful for taking recorded historical breaching events to predict when the next big breach may happen by analyzing patterns. This would be similar to how scientists of natural science would observe and record a volcanos activity in order to gain an idea for when its next big eruption will occur. Researchers could also use this information to study how breaches differentiate over a time span such as looking at the number of breaches each year over the last ten years in order to use that info elsewhere. In order to build on this, researchers may find more breaches each year with percentage increase and would then draw attention to finding out why that may be the case or why it is not the case.
