What are the connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU?

ODU believes that entrepreneurship is interdisciplinary. With the collaboration of individuals of different professions, problems can be solved by applying the expertise of multiple disciplines. This allows for multiple points of view to approach the problem, allowing for more dynamic and open-minded problem solving.

Is entrepreneurship an art or science?

Entrepreneurship is both an art and a science. While problem solving and innovation requires the application of artistic creativity, the methods in which these ideas and solutions are made possible is through scientific process.

How is failure good?

Failure is good because it provides a moment to reflect. When we fail, we analyze what happened to cause the failure and therefore, try again hoping to succeed. In an entrepreneurial sense, when an initial idea does not work, the entrepreneur is then encouraged to return to the drawing board and refine their idea in a way that is better than before. In essence, failure is key to creating the best version of a product or idea.

What have I learned from failing?

There are many instances where I can recount failing; in an academic sense, in an artistic sense, and, as seen in the examples in this module, in video games. These are only a few ways I have failed, and with each failure I eventually created a motto for myself: “failure doesn’t mean Game Over, it means try again with experience.” I remember this quote every time I am faced with a challenge and rather than grieving about the failure, I use it as an opportunity to better myself and to stay resilient until eventually, I come out successful.

What ethical issues might arise related to what I am working on?

In reference to the upcoming proposal my group and I are formulating, the issue that we are considering working on actually is an ethical issue in itself. This is because it is a topic related to data privacy and how peoples’ information is handled online. We are working toward a way to allow people to have more control over what happens with their data on certain platforms because of these ethical dilemmas. However, if this were to become a business, the potential ethical issues might arise from the background organization of the business’s employees rather than its practices, since individuals are capable of forsaking ethics regardless of the business’s services.
