Four ethical issues that arise with storing individuals electronic information includes:
- Privacy and Confidentiality
- Secuirty Breaches
- System Implementation
- Data Inaccuracies
Every individual has the right to keep information about themselves private and undisclosed from others as well as shielded from surveillance whether that be from people, companies, or the government. If you look at things like HIPPA laws that protect patients’ information from being shared aside from select accepted individuals. However certain information regarding patients can be shared without the confidentiality of their personal info being released such as how many Americans have certain diseases they will pull statistics from those kinds of readings. Security breaches happen every day in the general public as well as companies and governments defending against national and foreign cyberattacks. A very common security breach involves the leaking of passwords. Some of those passwords may not mean too much to some people but if hackers can find one password they can assume that it will correlate with other accounts such as your bank or personal email then dig into the more high profile targets. Big tech companies have fallen victim to these unethical practices where people’s information gets shared in mass amounts threatening larger populations instead of single individuals. There are also concerns with attacks from the inside, not just foreign attackers. People with a personal vendetta, disgruntled employees, or even mistakes made by employees with access to this kind of information can cause a huge issue for individuals and companies alike. System implementation can open a window for many instances of ethical issues. Setting up new systems or updating systems already in place can have problems arise in security being implemented or updated. Any lapse in time showing lowered or a loss in security would open up opportunities for hackers to come in and take that information. Ignorance as to how these security systems work can allow for mistakes being made on the producer and consumer sides. Having professionals or training for employees as well as proper funding for these kinds of systems will counter the possibility of an ethics issue. Data inaccuracy can cause integrity issues whether that be from improper input of information or the need for updating prior information. Data reliability is in constant need of reworking and security. An inaccuracy in data can cause confusion and further lead to more problems causing distrust between users or consumers of those who house data.
