In comparison, the United States and the United Kingdom share very similar cyber threats as well as their level of security. This would make sense as they are both allies and a part of the same organizations and partnerships such as NATO, and their main adversaries, Russia and China who are not a part of said partnerships are the countries where attacks originate attacks the most. The biggest cyber threats for the USA are ones that target critical infrastructure of companies and the government as well as meddle in our politics. You have famously the 2016 presidential election where the IRA created multiple bot accounts on social media to spread misinformation about the campaigns of certain individuals to bolster the likelihood of other candidates’ chances at garnering a win. Most recently from Russia, we had the Colonial Pipeline hacked by a group of hackers who sent the civilians within the affected areas to stock up on gas, even though there was plenty to go around until the system had been restored. The Russian hackers demanded a ransom be paid in order to return the security of the pipeline back to its operators. Attacks in the United Kingdom such as incidents regarding the Hackney Borough Council, which resulted in IT systems being crippled for months and Ireland’s Health Service Executive having appointments and services dismantled. The same fate for the USA has fallen onto the UK where they suffer from Russian hackers’ unethical practices. Both countries have increased their budgets for their cyber defense systems. The problem with the USA and UK’s way of dealing with cyber threats is that they fall behind in successful security measures as well as hacking of their own. They both follow strict cyberspace laws and ethics as to how they go about servicing these practices whereas the Russian and Chinese governments, as well as independent hackers, do not share the same willingness to follow these laws.
