Journal Entry 1

I decided to choose cybersecurity as I had an interest in computers and the way they worked which then led me down a rabbit hole of research. The protective features and security aspect of our cyber space instantly grabbed me and I looked into what job opportunities were available. I think it’s really cool that you can go quite literally anywhere with this overall job field. You can work in the states, remote, other countries, you name it. Another factor is that you can do private work for companies like Google, Apple, Amazon, etc. On the other edge of the spectrum, you have the public sector where you can work for the military as a civilian or join the forces. You can work for the government directly or be a private contractor for them, therefore the options are limitless. I haven’t quite figured out what exactly I want to do in cyber or in the computer science field as a whole as I still have a lot of time and classes to take that I assume will shape my ideology and perspective as to what I am most interested in. So far my plan is to get my bachelor’s degree then look for jobs in the private contracting field as there are good benefits, superior job growth, location, and security as well as competitive pay. After graduating with my bachelor’s, I plan to pursue my master’s in cybersecurity from ODU immediately that way I can increase my benefits at my current position as well as open more doors for growth within the company or looking elsewhere. The current career path I anticipate taking up includes internships while I’m in college to get good experience than to pursue a System Admin position and with improved credentials and training, move my way up to a CISO position.
