Journal entry #12(week 13)

How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?

I personally feel that victims of online offenders would not even be aware of their offender in a public setting. Due to the fact that offenders like to hide behind a certain persona online, that does not give away their true identity. Online however is a different story. Targeting victims online is extremely easy for offenders. Especially since the age range of victims and targets are so vast. As long as you know how to use technology even in the slightest way, offenders will see you as a target. The offender can sit behind a screen, and cause harm to the victim without any physical contact. The offenses made can cause long term damage to the victim, even when the victim is unaware of the damage. If we take child predators for example…they use the internet faithfully in order to get in contact with a adolencents and minors who may be using social media, they can lie about their age in order to trick the minor, and say that they are the same age as them. They can ask for nude pictures from the victim and sell the pictures to whomever, and sell them for child pornography. Now the victim who sent the picture may only think that the pictures were sent to the offender, but little do they know it can be surfacing all over the internet. In other instances the victims are aware of the damage that was done, and it can cause tons of mental anguish. The scary thing is people do this and go undetected, hurting more victims that come their way. It can be very hard to track these offenders down, and once the victim wants justice, they realize how hard it can be to find their offender.
