Journal entry #13 (for week 14)

How should we approach the development of cyber-policy and -infrastructure given the “short arm” of predictive knowledge?

We can approach this by coming to the realization that no one is safe essentially. Cyber attacks always strike when least expected. So it is more than essential to be prepared for the worst. Enforcing a cyber-policy can be beneficial for businesses. It can protect them from long term damage, can save them money, due to the fact that cyber attacks can cause a business to crumble. Having the proper infrastructure is key to having a successful business. The extreme price you have to pay due to a cyber attack is not all that some can endure after falling victim to an attack. Some other things that can occur are, damage to information or information systems regulatory fines and penalties/ legal fees, decreased productivity, loss of information critical in running one’s business, an adverse reputation or loss of trust from customers, damage to one’s credit and inability to recieve loans from banks, or even loss of business income.A small business should start off small and graudally increase its protection. a business can take extra precaution by identifying and controlling who has access to the company’s information. Then when it comes to hiring employees, they should run thorough background checks, with this they would also limit employee access to data and information. Then invest in the proper necessities for protecting the business information. Monetary wise this can seem like a lot on a businesses budget especially small businesses. However the cost of of a cyber attack is more damaging to a company’s budget, status, and success rate. This is why being prepared is so vital. As mentioned, attacks can come at anytime, even if a company has gone without any attacks for years, that does not limit the risk. You should always be ready.
