Journal entry#11(for week 12)

Criminal justice and cybercrime in this day and age practically are a packaged deal. Cybercrime is literally everywhere, and as technology slowly becomes a part of  our every day lives, and inserting itself into our routines, the risk of cybercrime grows. Thus making everything we do dealing with technology a threat to our own security. Due to the prevalence of cybercrime arose the development of digital forensics. Digital forensics is pretty much how it sounds, it is a new type of criminal investigation, referring to the investigations of cyber, computer, electronic, etc. In order to truly understand the criminal justice system and what specific cyber crimes deserve certain punishments, requires a lot of research. Really knowing the ins and outs is a necessity, because one should know everything there is to know about cyber crimes, in order to bring a cybercrime victim to justice. As I mentioned before technology is in about every single aspect of our lives, so it only makes sense for criminal justice to have that specific “know-how” on how to properly deal with cybercriminals. Cyber attacks on small businesses like we mentioned in previous discussions, can affect a company on such a large scale. Something as simple as a small breach in a system can cost a business tens of thousands of dollars in the damage from the attack alone. Not to mention the cost of the repair, which is why it is so important to invest in that software protection to avoid something like this. Due to the growth of technology and cybercrime, it is vital that the criminal justice system updates its knowledge of cybercrime to better understand and better deal with cybercriminals. Just because the crimes are committed behind a screen does not minimize the damage done. The effects of these crimes can leave more long term damage compared to others.
