Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.

Symantec has created an index of cyber crime activities that include hosting malware, botnets, phishing, server hosting, and how many botnet command and control servers there are within each nation. The top five nations on this index include the US, China, Brazil, Germany, and India. Russia is the seventh.

The top countries to host botnets, which are often used to send spam emails, are Vietnam, China, Russia, and India. The United States is targeted the most by phishing attacks, suffering 60% of worldwide phishing volume. The top countries that are the source of phishing attacks are China, Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and Brazil.

Nigeria tends to be the most well known as a source of advance fee fraud schemes. Advance fee fraud schemes are social scams that make you pay before receiving a service but then strings you along and never delivers. Other states that this happens a lot in include South Africa, Ghana, and the United States

Pirating, which is thought to be minor but is steadily growing, is also a cyber crime that is most prevalent in the United States, China, Russia, and Ukraine.

Although there is quite a bit of information on what country these threats are coming from there aren’t as many studies on which states are the primary producer of these attacks and why so many attacks are coming from these countries. Echenomicks, social studies, technological differences, between these countries could be studied and this would reveal a lot about these countries and the attacks.

Existing research has looked at cyber crime levels with a national perspective but only speculate  rather than study and categorize. Nations that have the highest internet connectivity tend to produce the most spam, malware, fraud, and digital piracy, we don’t know which countries specialize in which of these cyber crimes.
