The overlap between criminal justice and cyber crime is that cyber security specialists are the police of the internet. Cyber security specialists need to know the rules of internet engagement if we are supposed to enforce them and protect users. We also need to understand people and why they do the things they do and how they are most likely to do them in order to prevent hackers. The prediction of actions can even prevent employees from making mistakes that could have been expected and prevented. There are certain rules that police would enforce in the real world that they don’t have the technical expertise or understanding to enforce or discover. Rules in the physical world carry over to the cyber world also, like protection of privacy and information. Criminal justice just like Cyber security uses psychology to predict and understand the criminals in order to prevent crimes. As we move more to a digital world rules are being adjusted and made to incorporate cyber interactions.
Cyber Security is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates different disciplines like criminal justice, psychology, Information Technology and various others. These cross disciplinary studies which are used to counter hackers are more diverse than the few I mentioned. Psychology is huge in cyber security. It is used to understand the hacker and the employee in order to predict and prevent cyber security risks and user errors. If you work cyber security for a specific company in a specific field like contracting then you need to understand multiple cross disciplines. Knowledge as diverse as understanding engineering can be useful to understand what types of documents are used and how they are sent and received and how communication externally from the company is needed to perform Cyber Security in a construction field. Knowing what type of software and how the engineer uses them is important. Cyber security is infinitely diverse.
