Review the articles linked with each individual motive. Rank the
motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense
(being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each
motive the way you rank it
• Political https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/new-generation-of-angry-youthful-hackers-join-the-hacktivism-wave-adding-to-cyber-security-woes/articleshow/81707844.cms
#1 I think political reasons to hack is one of the top reasons. Political reasons are one of the strongest there are. People will do anything to fight for what they think the country needs and people in politics are verry passionate. The hacktivists towards Russia and from Russia are a perfect example.
• Revenge https://newsfromwales.co.uk/news/revenge-porn-victims-in-wales-often-feel-let-down-by-the-law-as-cybercrime-slips-through-the-net/
#2 Revenge is one of the second reasons to hack. Again like politicks it is a strong feeling that make people do drastic things. People who are angry want to attack and hurt others and hacking is one of the easiest ways to do it in a highly digital world.
• Boredom https://www.heraldlive.co.za/news/2021-05-31-cyberbullying-and-online-sexual-grooming-of-children-on-the-increase/
#3 Boredom is a verry common to learn to hack. I learned to hack using “This is legal dot com” I never used my knowledge to do anything illegal but boredom was my motivator. Most of the hackers out there are unexperienced people who learned a few things online and I think boredom can lead you down long and dark paths on the internet especially in the early 2000s when things were highly unmonitored.
• Entertainment
https://9to5mac.com/2021/07/19/man-behind-linkedin-scraping/
#4 Entertainment goes hand in hand with boredom. If you’re bored you look for something to entertain you and again boredom can definitely lead you to hacking.
• For money https://threatresearch.ext.hp.com/sex-drugs-and-toilet-rolls-how-cybercriminals-spend-their-money-infographic/
#5 Money is not a huge influencer in my opinion it can be a factor but a lot of hacks don’t lead to money gain so this is on the lower end of motives in my opinion.
• Recognition https://www.theregister.com/2021/06/30/bradley_niblock_election_ddos/
#6 Recognition is even lower than money because in my opinion the internet is meant to be anonymous. people gain courage to do bad things like hack because they have the leisure of anonymity. Anonymity is why they commit cyber crime instead of in person crimes.
• Multiple reasons https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/what-drives-hackers-to-a-life-of/?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=pmd_c1d89a4695edbd23f2bceb54d70f35ce5e536e86-1626721164-0-gqNtZGzNAfijcnBszQi6

#7 I didn’t understand this reason even though I read the article. Of course people do anything for multiple reasons. This motive seems open ended in my opinion and not a real motive.
