SPANISH 101

My Review!

Exploring Culture

When the discussion boards are poste, I have the opportunity to learn about other cultures. When I first started learning, I was intermediated by Spanish Speakers speaking fast at the lack of understanding., Now I embrace the native Speakers speaking to me to test my knowledge.

The stereotypes that have been thrown around about the Hispanic culture are almost all wrong. The only thing that is right its how romantic the culture is that is filled with interesting people. I have overcame this fear of learning Spanish once I accepted that I will face some challenges and this comes with learning a new language.

Engaging in Communities

My step dad and best friend are Puerto Rican and fluently speaks Spanish. As I have learned Spanish within this class I am able to engage more in conversations with them. I feel that putting in the effort to learn this new language, you can build on relationships with other people outside of your culture. It makes the person feel appreciated that you’ve taken the time to learn about their culture and are able to give the appropriate appreciation to them.

Interpersonal Communication

In the virtual class, my classmates and I communicate and translate for each other the correct meaning to words we are not familiar with. Outside of class when my stepdad and I hold conversations between one another, we communicate face- to – face. When he explains to my mother the conversation that we have, he uses some gestures to show the difference between the English and Spanish translation.

My mother got married in the middle of the semester. During her wedding I said somethings in Spanish that made her “In-Laws” proud that I have begun learning the language. It was spontaneous because I wasn’t supposed to speak during the wedding but ended up being my Mother’s Maid of Honor. Having the conversations and practices have built me to becoming a better Spanish speaker. I have accepted the fact that I am still in the beginning part of learning and I let everyone know before offending anyone.

Presentational Speaking

During the semester, my partner and I engaged and speaking in Spanish. The activities that are required with a partner has helped build our vocabulary and strengthen our speaking skills. Outside of school, I greet my family now in Spanish and asking them “How are you doing” with a correct response.

The challenge I know that I face was pronunciation. I struggle a bit with the common English language and trying to connect with how English and Spanish could have some common words. The presentation that I have done has challenged me to be able to use the vocabs and create my own kind of presentation.

Presentational Writing

Throughout the semester, we engaged in writing activities. Most of the activities are to test our knowledge and see if we can complete sentences. The writing activities also prepare the class for the writing portion on the test. The test ultimately test our knowledge to further see if we retained the information throughout the chapter.

Writing is a very formal way of reciprocating what is taught. Being that I have learned numerous things, I am able to display my knowledge. With this activity specifically, it challenged my knowledge from what i had to learn throughout the Chapter 3 section. With this, I was able to write compound sentences reflecting what has been taught inside of the lesson.

Interpretive Listening

During the discussion board post, we’re required to do research on the different music that is within the Hispanic culture. As the class listen to the music we can began to pick up on the words that are being used within the song. We have the ability to translate the words in English and formulate what the song could potently be about.

The challenge that I had was being able to comprehend what is being said when the speakers talk fast. At first I was expecting it to a slow pace but when I broke down what the speakers are saying the pace doesn’t bother me anymore. Taking the time to listen to the audio several times will help to understand what is being said. Keyword are often displayed throughout to be able to catch on to what is being talked about.

Interpretive Reading

In the course, there is an extensive amount of reading that takes place. Most of the learning comes from reading the material. In the Language Learning Center, I take advantage of the extra help that is offered to help me understand the new words within the new chapter. The tutor takes their time to explain how to read and identify important pieces of information.

The photo above shows the kind of reading that we inside of our books that tie into the assignments. The only challenge that I had was I was depending on the photos to give me some insight about what the conversations were going to be on. Now that I am aware of the habits that I tend to rely on the pictures I start challenging myself to cover the photos’ and figure out the conversation before seeing the photo. The most interesting part about reading the scenario’s are that they tie into the previous chapter and continue to progress with the characters.
