An Effective Reflection Is

Exploring Culture

Alike last semester, Contaseña- our online textbook, gave me insight into Hispanic culture. For example, the textbook taught me that calling someone fat in Hispanic culture is perceived as a compliment. However, in the United States and most American cultures describing someone as fat is considered disrespectful. The textbook even has cultural exploration activities, and students read about different countries through the exploration activities. For example, I learned that certain vegetables and meats, such as chorizo and ham, are commonly eaten. Finally, my belief that Ecuadorians eat guinea pigs was challenged.

Then, in a short paragraph write your reflection. Some questions that may help you process your reflections are: In what way did these products and practices help you better understand values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture as well as your own? How did these products and practices challenge your worldview? What challenges did these perspectives reveal to you? How did it cause you to work through a stereotype or misconception you had and cause you to view the world from a different perspective? Use specific examples.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in the global community is significant because it could ensure job security. For example, some occupations might be looking for a bilingual candidate. Additionally, global community engagement can enhance travel experiences. For example, I vacationed with family in Costa Rica a few years ago – and I used my Spanish knowledge to communicate, four-wheel, and eat.

Interpersonal Communication

The above discussion board was about favorite foods. For the assignment, students watched a video viewing foods or staples of different countries. Our class wrote about which foods seemed to appease. Furthermore, I chose to write about Felijoada because it reminds me of chili.

Before enrolling in Spanish 102 for the summer semester, I wouldn’t have been able to use the Spanish equivalent of the word plate. For example, writing in Spanish is difficult. However, I overcame this difficulty by using context clues and occasionally Spanish dictionaries. Moreover, i believe that I’m better at speaking Spanish because I am an auditory learner.

Presential Speaking

Flipgrid is one of the platforms where students have conversations with the professor. This conversation – module nine was about Health. The class was perceived as sick and described their symptoms. Speaking in Spanish isn’t usually too difficult, and writing in the language is. However, I have undergone difficulty speaking with reflexive and stem-changing verbs. Unfortunately, I have yet to overcome this issue, but I will put aside my pride and ask for help next time.

Presentational Writing

Students were asked to describe the family in the photo above. The description translates to Julian is young, and his hair is dark and short. Describing families and with they look like it was easy but writing in Spanish is generally difficult. Plan to overcome my pride by signing up for tutoring next time.

Interpretive Listening

The listening activities that I completed were Contaseña, and one activity was about different types of people and their majors.

Through the audio assignments, I learned that native speakers speak very fast. I had to constantly replay what they were saying and look out for context clues

Interpretive Reading

Module 10- our last module-was all about sports. The above article is about sending over a Peruvian soccer player.

Reading in Spanish is extremely tedious. However, I changed the language on my computer from English to Spanish to gain a better understanding. Additionally, I also continued using my context clues.
