Develop a proposal and timeline for your client service project.

The Problem

The need that we’ve identified is an easily-accessible, informational flyer depicting a four-year plan for an ODU English major. Six possible concentrations are offered to students: Applied language studies, creative writing, journalism, literature, technical writing, and teaching. The flyer for this project will revolve around the literature concentration, a courseload focused on literary tradition and methodologies for interpreting literary works. That being said, the intended audience for this flyer is anyone interested in pursuing English literature as a major, most likely incoming freshmen or transfer students. For them, their values lie in understanding the content to best plan for their academic career. The secondary audience might be faculty advisors, new hires, or stakeholders, who are looking to understand said content for the benefit of students and/or the department.

Project Plan

My intention for this project is to use Adobe InDesign on the Macbooks available in both our classroom and Perry Library. The flyer will be vertical, and 8.5 x 11 inches, so that it’s easily printable by students and/or faculty, etc. The design will feature two pages: one with information regarding the major itself, the literature concentration, and potential career paths, and another with the actual four-year plan, possibly featuring a chart where students can fill in the courses they’ve chosen. I’m hoping to incorporate ODU’s color palette, including but not limited to “Midnight” (#0A192D) and “Aluminum” (#E1EAF0). Further, the design will remain simple and easy to read, lacking any large graphics or distracting fonts.

Justification

This proposed design is appropriate for ODU English literature majors as it will serve as a branded, eye-catching, and interactive four-year plan to benefit their course selection process. With a straightforward and simple design, the goal of this flyer is to alleviate any confusion or anxiety regarding course planning.

Timeline

A rough draft of the design will be available for preview by Friday, Nov. 11, when editing will commence. This draft will include all required material, as in two full pages of content as described above. Usability testing will occur on Monday, Nov. 28 when any inconsistent information or design flaws will be noted upon. The final draft will be completed by Wednesday, Dec. 7. All together, the process should take approximately one month to complete.
