Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication (<- was told to keep this link!)

About Me

¡Hola!

I am Danae Harper. I am a Women’s and Genders Studies/ Philosophy major and love learning about the world, people, and how we interact in different systems of society. My goals are to be able to connect with others and create change together. I aspire to work with non profits to combat social injustices for people from all identities and backgrounds. I am interested in the environmental and social impacts that climate change and industrialization has on food inequity and access. I also would love to do tattooing and own a bookstore/ coffee shop as a career in the future. I want to make a change and help people whenever I can!

I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts, have always loved animals, nature, and art, and have been playing soccer for the majority of my life. My family would take me and my sisters to art and science museums, go to plays and performances, going sledding in feet of snow in the winters, and take visits to the beach in the summers– all of which I think all shaped me into someone that strives to be continuously learning and exploring.

Exploring Culture and Engaging in Communities

We read about and did activities regarding culture and community in Spanish speaking countries around the world. This helps expand our perspectives and gain insight into different cultures. It is important to understand others and their cultures because it helps form community of our own. We are able to find similarities and help each other by learning from each other rather than dividing factors being a barrier. Further, understanding culture and creating community is especially important when speaking a native language as a sign of respect and credit.

Doing these culture activities allowed me to understand more about Hispanic culture, not as a monolith, but as rich and diverse. It helped me broaden my own perspective of the world and world cultures. This also is applicable to daily individual encounters. It gave me more background, understanding, and compassion for those who speak Spanish in my life and around me.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad provided a space to practice speaking skills as well as learning from native Spanish speakers. It was really impactful to do TalkAbroad because I had never gotten the chance to have a full conversation with a native Spanish speaker, in Spanish, outside of the classroom. It gave me more confidence, improved my comprehension skills, and was a an overall cool experience. It helped me grow in conversational dialogue and language, where we normally practice more formal setting Spanish speaking activities. It was definitely new and challenging, but that is more reason to do it and how rewarding it was to do it!

Presentational Speaking

We did in-class presentational assignments to practice speaking and articulating and also projects (proyectos) to familiarize ourselves with presentational speaking. It helped to further use vocabulary and grammar to formulate a coherent project. This helped with the application of our vocabulary and grammar in the real world and how we, as individuals, would apply our skills and knowledge learned and used in class to the real world.

Presentational Writing

We would do projects and assignments to help formulate larger ideas, similar to the speaking presentations. This differed in the sense that we had more of a concrete idea and organization for the project. Yet, the goal of application of what we were learning was just as impactful. These writing assignments allowed for situational and structured use of different forms of grammar and how they would be portrayed to others/ used in our own lives.
