On this day in 1945 the Nuremberg trials began. For the first time in human history people will be brought to justice for events committed during war time. Crimes against the peace as they would come to be known, would result in the hanging of many top Nazi officials. These crimes including the purposeful killing of thousands of innocent civilians and the mistreatment of prisoners of war. Most of the Nazi officials claimed that “they were just following orders” however the allies called them out on this. Dozens of Nazis would be sentenced to hang for what they did, and it set a world precedent for what would be tolerated in time of war.
