Through this internship, I hope to be able to achieve the following three professional goals.
- To be able to gain the knowledge to lead a team and make decisions for my team. Up until about a year ago, in my work experience, I’ve never worked in any type of managerial or leadership role. I expect to be able to watch my preceptor in these areas and take notes of how she does this. I expect to be able to also achieve this goal by working on projects where people come to me for information and/or help. I also currently work at a hospital in the ER in registration as a Patient Access Rep 3. As a rep 3, I am a preceptor and certified in my role. I expect to be able to use this position to help with me gaining more knowledge as well. One thing I expect to be able to learn in both of these roles is how to be more assertive.
- Expand my professional network. I expect to be able to do this by making more connections within the office of my internship. I can do this by communicating more with people and getting to know them better. Working directly with the people in the office on projects will help to expand my professional network as well. Another way I expect to be able to do this in my internship is by offering to stay and/or help out when needed. I expect to be able to watch how my preceptor communicates with the staff and use this as a way to help me to communicate with my staff after I graduate too.
- Become a better mentor. I expect to be able to watch my preceptor and see the ways in which she leads me and take that ability to use with my own team once I graduate. There are always ways in which we can improve and/or learn and if I can help my team in any sort of way, I will. I hope to also be able to mentor some of the new volunteers at some point as they come into the office. I am a very hands on learner. In my current job, I am a preceptor myself. Taking a preceptor course has definitely helped me in my ways of becoming a better mentor.
