My Personal Statement

From a young age, science has always been my favorite subject. When pursuing my higher education there was no doubt that I would pursue a degree in Biology. Biology classes always sparked my interest and the more I learned the subject the more I realized I wanted to have a career in the medical field. My high school biology classes truly solidified my decision in pursuing a career in the medical field. Something about those classes resonated with me and helped me come to the realization that working in medicine is something I want to do for the rest of my life. Helping people as a healthcare professional is something I am truly passionate about. Having the ability to help people in such a significant way is a small part of the job but at the end of the day it can be the most rewarding. Specifically, I want my focus to be in pediatrics or neonatology. I grew up around my mother’s daycare and I worked in a daycare for years, so the idea of being able to help children as a healthcare professional is my number one goal. I plan to use my biology degree to go to nursing school to become a pediatric nurse or a neonatal nurse. I have not settled where I plan to go for nursing school yet, but I am always looking into what each program has to offer and what might be the best fit for me. However, I am considering taking a gap year between undergraduate school and nursing school. If I chose to take a gap year, I want to work on becoming a certified EMT. Becoming an EMT is also something that really interests me due to the high energy, fast pace job that it can be. If I do choose to take the gap year, I still want to be learning and working within the medical field and I think working towards EMT certification provides everything I want in a gap year. After EMT certification I would then go to nursing school and use my certification in any way I could, whether that be pursuing a job as a paramedic while in school, or simply volunteering as an EMT. I also plan on doing a ton of volunteering any change I get. Whether I chose to go to nursing school right away or take a gap year, I plan on volunteering in the medical field. Ideally, I would like to volunteer in a children’s hospital, not only to be of help but to get the experience for my future career. Although, I cannot exactly predict my path and everything I am going to have to do to get my dream job in the medical field, but I am extremely motivated to make my future career as a pediatric nurse or a neonatal nurse happen.

primary articles vs. review articles

A primary article is an article with research conducted by the author or authors. These articles do not typically use review articles as a source; the information published is the research of the author/authors. However, the author/authors may choose to use secondary articles of prior research to further dive into their own research. Primary articles are often peer-reviewed by people or professionals that deal with the subject.

A review article is an article that will summarize findings on specific topics from papers that have already been published by an author or authors. Review articles focus on the published research, no new research is often provided. These articles will often pose questions for further findings on the subject being discussed. The purpose of these kind of articles is to summarize the research findings and to further question future findings.

The scientific peer review process is a process where other scientific professionals will review and edit the original research. This process is used to find any scientific mistakes in the article by having multiple people review that article. The scientific peer review process will look at the findings and the surrounding arguments to look at the validity of the scientific research. This is done before the final publication of an article to ensure that the scientific research is displayed efficiently and effectively.

A review article summarizes the findings of published research work. Review articles provide no new research but will provide questions for further research. The peer review process is done before the final publication of an article, people educated in the subject will work to review the findings of the research. Peer reviewed journals are looked as as reliable due to the peer review process.

Between the two articles, “An mRNA Vaccine against SARS-CoV-2” is the primary article. This articles provides background, methodology, discussions, results, conclusions, etc. The article lists multiple authors and their academic degrees. The article, “COVID-19 vaccine: A recent update in pipeline vaccines, their design and development strategies” is the review article. This article contains multiple in text citations from other authors to provide main point topics from other articles to allow people to form opinions and discuss questions for further research.

find a meme!

I chose this meme, what we study in class vs. what we see on exams, not because it’s necessarily how I feel towards exams we take in this class but because I’m learning so much in a short period of time that sometimes looking at an exam can look like a jumbled mess. As well as, leading towards the end of the summer semester so much is happening, final assignments, final projects and final exams are all due. For me specifically, I have been taking 3 science classes this summer and cramming in a whole bunch of knowledge between genetics, evolution, and cell biology in a 6 week period. My classes have given me all the material I need to know to prepare myself to succeed in these classes, but sometimes it takes a minute to look at an exam and realize it’s not a jumbled mess, but everything I’ve learned in class.
