SCADA Systems Write-Up

SCADA is a system of hardware elements as well a system of software that allows industrial organizations to monitor, gather, and process real-time data. Industrial control systems, such as SCADA systems and other OT systems, serve as the foundation for critical infrastructure. The cyber security infrastructure needs to be at the highest level for its utilities to run reliably due to being depended on by their critical assets in operational environments. There are two major threats to the SCADA systems, one of them is unauthorized access to the software’s which can be human access, intentionally induced changes or even virus infections. The other major threat is related to the packet access to network segments that host SCADA devices. Some vulnerabilities associated with critical infrastructure systems include the loss of availability that can lead to safety hazards and endanger human life. Cyber-attacks on vital infrastructure OT networks can have disastrous consequences, with crucial operational downtime being the primary target. Installations, assets, programs, systems, or any of their dependencies that could degrade or suffer or lose function to its assigned role because of an attack, threat, or natural disaster are considered vulnerabilities to these infrastructures. Protections must be put in place to decrease the amount of risk that can be aimed at them, as threats can be natural, unintentional, technical, or human-caused. To mitigate vulnerabilities preventive measures must be put in place. Allowing only authorized users, avoiding illegal changes, packet access to the network, and other concerns are among the preventive methods. To address vulnerabilities quickly, organizations need to establish a virtual private network (VPN), firewall solutions, security checks, report monitoring, and standard protocols.
