“The Quest”

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ Broadcaster For a Day

A reason why I reached out to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ Mike Lindskog is the fact that the Quakes are my Hometown team, kind of. I grew up a town over, in Fontana, and had a chance to attend a couple of games growing up. I remember hearing the announcer and didn’t know that position was a part of a larger career field. I was a part of the yearbook team in high school and thought this would be fun to do as a job, but I didn’t know it was an option. I wanted to build “The Quest” around informing high school Juniors and Seniors of the possibility that took me years to find.

The first part of the plan is to build promotional material directed at social media sites and posters to print and send to schools to hang up around campus. A press release would then be sent to local media channels such as Fontana Herald, Inland Valley News, and Daily Bulletin. We would also send the press release to the school district and high school officials in the surrounding towns and include the digital copy of the poster.

Students would be asked to apply via the Quakes website. The application would consist of student contact info, a personal essay, and a teacher recommendation. There won’t be a requirement for a portfolio because we don’t want to close off the program from students who have not had the chance to have done anything PR related.

The internship itself would consist of a week leading up to a game where the student is a “Broadcaster for a Day.” During the week, the participant will help write a press release and a story, take photos and create content for social media. They will also learn their expectations for announcements during the game.

A highlight story could then be pitched to local media of the brief internship and the intern. This type of publicity could bring goodwill to the Quakes and benefit a local student. The student could then take products to add to their portfolio before they start college. If the project is successful, it could be done every year.
