The sports crisis event I chose to cover is the backlash of events leading up to Jason Brown, former coach of Independence Community College, being forced to resign after his Last Chance U season aired on Netflix. After the season aired, messages were released of coach Brown being racially prejudice to one of his players. Besides this event, Brown’s vulgar language and aggressive behaviors received lots of backlash from viewers of the show, because of Brown’s aggressive nature, this event could have been fuel to his already burning fire. Although coach Brown has been known for his winning seasons at ICC, the tactics used with his players are sometimes very over the top. Due to his hit or miss relationship between him and the viewers of the show, coach Brown’s coaching strategy has faced a lot of backlash. Because of the way he is, I think an effective way to navigate the social media backlash of his coaching strategies would be to explain and show spectators how much you care for your players. In the sports world, a coach can serve a lot of roles to their players, because of this aggression is often used. Although a lot of the language used throughout the season are often heard on football fields across the nation, the meaning behind those words can be misidentified by the naked ear of people that watch the show on television. Showing the other side of those words can go a long way to knowing sometimes the aggressive behaviors come from love and not from hate. In navigating social media, I think an effective strategy would be to make sure that media sees how much you love your players. Another strategy would be to take negative comments and backlashes with a grain of salt. Although coach brown may not be understood by a lot of people, social media serves as perception to society. Along with words he used, the media perception of coach Brown really helped in him being forced to resign. I truly believe if the media did not have a negative view on coach Brown, it would be much harder to let him go. Through social media bias in sports, it can really force leaders in sports organizations to make certain moves to appeal to the wants of fans, because of this, in situations like coach Brown’s social media can be very influential in crisis situations in sports like job security.
