Vision Statement
The Old Dominion University Data Science Institute (DSI) executes the forward-focused vision of Old Dominion University (ODU) thorough cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaborations. The DSI brings together expertise from different academic units to solve some of the complex societal challenges using data, and forms partnerships with industry, government, and communities to translate the solutions into practice.
Mission Statement
The DSI aims to be a hub at ODU for the following:
- Drive data science and AI innovation and technology development
- Foster collaborations between ODU with public and private sectors in the region for data science and AI driven solutions
- Facilitate technology transfer and commercialization of data science and AI solutions in the region
History
Old Dominion Data Science opened the Virginia Beach Institute of Data Science on November 16, 2023. The new 17,617-square-foot facility is designed to be a hub for data-driven research and exploration, housing dedicated training space for cybersecurity simulations; collaboration areas where students and industry leaders can discuss and test new research models; and cutting-edge research labs for data driven exploration. The institute includes incubator and accelerator spaces, research and teaching labs and state-of-the-art research equipment. The facility will provide an environment where industry-research partnerships can take place, facilitating the exchange of ideas, resources and expertise between academia and the business community.
