These characteristics make traditional law enforcement strategies less effective because investigators can no longer rely only on physical evidence, local witnesses, or clear jurisdictional boundaries. A suspect may operate behind fake identities, route activity through multiple countries, and delete evidence quickly. Fraud is a strong example of a traditional crime that has become harder to prosecute in digital form. Instead of face-to-face scams, offenders now use phishing emails, fake websites, and stolen identities to target thousands of victims at once, making it more difficult to trace the offender and recover losses.

The lag between technology-connected crime and mainstream criminal justice research likely exists because academic institutions often change slowly compared to technology. As Payne and Hadzhidimova note, criminal justice programs have historically focused on traditional crime topics such as policing, courts, and corrections. Many researchers may also lack technical training, causing cybersecurity to remain separate from mainstream scholarship. In addition, technology evolves faster than universities can redesign curriculum and publish long-term studies.

One course title that helps bridge this gap is Insider Threat. This topic combines social science concepts such as human behavior, workplace motivation, trust, and organizational culture with STEM areas like network monitoring, access controls, and data analytics. It shows that cybersecurity problems are often caused by both people and systems working together.

In my opinion, the criminal justice system should do both: create specialized cyber units while also retraining all traditional roles to handle digital evidence. Specialized units can investigate advanced crimes, but every patrol officer and detective should understand phones, online evidence, and digital records because technology now touches nearly every case.

Digital platforms have not created entirely new forms of crime, but they have transformed traditional offenses by using the unique attributes of cyberspace such as anonymity, global reach, and rapid dissemination.
