When I signed up for Cross-cultural psychology, I was excited to learn more about how culture effects our behavior and gain a better understanding of cultural differences. After taking the class, I feel it was more about learning how to compare Americans with the rest of the world. I think I already had a pretty good grasp on the learning objectives, but now I can better apply them to psychology. I am going to be more diligent on checking the research that professors talk about, as I now have learned things I have been told were incorrect, such as the implications of group centered cultures. Though this did not change my attitude towards cross cultural psychology. If I were to take the course again, I probably would not have. I would have opted for a different course. I have changed the way I organize when to do work. I have gained an insight on different cultural expectations and to use those when in the work place.

I have learned that we really do not have a good understanding of other cultures, and much of the research that people talk about is incorrect, misunderstood, or from a long time ago. I learned a lot of what other classes have taught about asian cultures are outdated. I also learned that even when we are from different cultures, the inside needs are the same.

Gender affects many parts of our lives, and many people do not understand the impact gender norms play. On the other hand, media can help to change those. Disney fairy tails have never actually been about a women looking for a man to rescue her, though many ignorant influencers may say the contrary. Walt himself said that cinderella did not wait around. She went out and got the price herself. I think she is an interesting character, and had a positive impact on myself. Even though she is seen cleaning, cooking, and waiting on other people, she is not submissive as many try to say. Having a character that is not only kind, even after no one is kind to her, but she goes against things when they are not morally right. She is feminine, but not weak.

Autonomy is met by making my own choices, and doing what is best for me. I can achieve competence when I do not allow myself to get discourages, and be able to continue with asking questions when I do not know the answer or reason. I achieve relatedness by making friends with similar interests.

I could not add this as it was taken down, so I could not complete it.

Looking back at what the correct answers were to the questions I answered wrong seem to be linked to not reading the question correctly. Being able to look back is very helpful, since being able to look up the correct answer allowed me to see where I got confused and better understand the material. I did not take detailed enough notes, contributing to not filling the study guide how it should have been. I can take this feedback and use it for further exams, focusing on taking better notes, not taking tests when tired, and preparing better ahead of time.

The five-factor model, containing Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism also known as OCEAN, is a popular model to show dimensions of personality. I scored high in neuroticism, openness, and conscientiousness. These fit my personality pretty well. I tend to be sensitive and more anxious than average. This correlates with my N score. I have many interests, often look into subcultures, and am very imaginative, writing short stories and liked to play pretend a lot as a child. As high in openness as I am, this is no surprise. My high score in conscientiousness coincides well with being very goal oriented. I like to stick to plans, frequently make lists, and tend to be a perfectionist. I have lower level scores of agreeableness and extroversion. with. I tend to be very stubborn in my beliefs, skeptical of other people and their motives. I go against authority often, and tend to be competitive when playing everything from Frisbee golf to whose has the best birthday present. I do not agree with my score on extroversion. My low score would indicate that I am a introvert. While I do like to spend a good amount of time alone since I am a avid reader. While am more reserved, I do like to go to parties and be around people.

The above words are an example of some of the ways my friends described me. The most to stand out are intelligent, caring, and perseverant. Choosing to include this image is a great way to show my main traits!

My values play an important part in my life, especially when it comes to my career of choice. I believe compassion, authenticity, curiosity, and kindness are values I most align with. As I want to go into the healthcare field in order to help people, the values of compassion and kindness help me to want to help others who cannot help themselves. I also strongly believe in authenticity and being able to be open to those who are different. I also value curiosity and understanding things that may not be so simple. This translates in a love for learning. These two things pushed me to want to get my college degree. My life experiences such as having a fantastic biology teacher in highschool, and family members that helped me take the needed tests to start attending higher education helped make this possible. I had friends that were already in graduate school that really supported my decision to continue my education and better align my life with my values.

To Do list: This picture represents my textbooks and notebooks I go through almost daily. Weather it is to study or to do assignments, this stack of paper is the main part of my “to do list” everyday. It is a realistic representation of student life, keeping with my authenticity value. School is not always pretty notes, or printed out PowerPoints, but pages of messy written notes and late nights.

This image is just a glimpse into my daily life as a student. Long days and late nights are typical when wanting to succeed in college, and this picture is a good representation of the amount of detail and work needed for seemingly simple concepts to do well. By taking Cross-cultural psychology, I hope to gain new insight in how culture play a factor in beliefs and behaviors. Understanding how someone is impacted culturally and be able to use it in the outside world, whether that be in the field of psychology or just connecting with people. I expect to have a greater understanding of internal bias and how one can counteract it as best as possible. With the knowledge acquired of diversity, theory, and application I intend to work hard at understanding concepts learned here, and be able to better help others in the future.
