Assignment 5 Takeaway

Healthcare in many countries vary based on how developed the area is.  Mental healthcare is almost nonexistent in some areas developed, or not.  Mental health has been a rising issue for a multitude of years. Not only is funding limited, but in some places it is treated as a burden. In Mexico, mental health issues such as depression is looked down upon. Individuals who suffer from depression believe that they are a burden to their family and the society tells them that they are a burden to the nation. Thus, depression is just seen as a temporary issue and they believe once the individual focuses more on life events they will forget.  Personally, I do believe depression is a burden, but to the individual suffering. If depression was treated on an individual bases instead of a group, relapse and/or recurrence would decline. Treating depression in a less psychotic environment without psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy being generalized would help. Individuals should be able to point out their needs with additional assistance of medicine and therapy if necessary. Not every person suffering from depression needs pharmacotherapy.  For example, someone could simply need to visit their family members that are 8 hours away, but their job is too demanding and will not give extended time off. Allowing time off to an individual who has been diagnosed and deemed depressed should be mandatory for reasons as such.

Assignment 4 Takeaway

After completing assignment 4 I put gender roles and stereotyping into perspective.  Although advertisers attempt to appeal to a target audience, the target audience varies depending on the culture.  In North America we assign gender roles to specific advertisements.  Advertisements portray common values, beliefs, and morals  and the differences in gender equality.  Females and males have distinct roles in the advertising world. Females are seen as domesticated and males are mainly working. These gender roles vary by culture. In order to avoid losing money and/or law suits, advertisers keep things traditional.

Assignment 2 Takeaway

Prior to completing assignment 2, I had a narrow perspective about future orientation and what it actually meant outside of American values.  Compared to other countries, Americans like modernization.  In other places such as China and Japan, they prefer things to stay the same and be built on rather than completely demolished.  Although my family has a combination approach to future orientation, I am accustomed to the “American Way.” I will prefer that my children focus on what is happening currently, rather than putting sole focus on the future. That could lead to discouragement and in some cases it leads to mental disorders.  I researched studies while completing assignment 2 that confirms mental disorders in adolescences putting too much emphasis on future orientation.  I would like to adopt the African cultures mindset of “Tomorrow May Never Come.”  Although it seems saddening to think about, it encourages me to appreciate all present moments.

Assignment 1 Takeaway

While completing assignment 1 I begin to reflect on my own family’s culture and how it molded me into the individual I am currently.  It made me put myself in the position of someone else who may be unfamiliar and some things they could possibly face.  I appreciate the diversity of Old Dominion University even more which is why I included the image of the fountain.  The fountain is located in the middle of campus.  While in the area (even just passing by) I see all faces of all kinds.  Everyone here plays a role of their own whether they are an international student, local student, or a professor.  I believe that the diversity of the university and their helping hand to all is the lead contributing factor for making the university successful.
