Journal Entry #4

Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.

The Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a theory that all humans have needs. The theory
suggests that once our needs are met, we climb up the hierarchy of needs. The
hierarchy is broken down into 5 categories: psychological, safety, belongingness and
love, esteem, and self-actualization. In today’s digital world, this hierarchy is relevant
today more than ever before. The need to stay connected or online has become a
fundamental part of our daily lives and I can see how my digital experience is relative to
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. I have the psychological need to check my social media
apps every day and I freak out if my internet connection is not working. I get annoyed if
my phone’s lagging or buffering. My safety needs are met when I browse the internet
knowing my VPN is on and securely protecting my privacy or knowing I can check my
banking apps without worrying that someone is going to steal all my money. I have my
belongingness, and love needs fulfilled when I see how many followers I have on my
Instagram and LinkedIn knowing that I can reach out to them and have a conversation
anytime. I have my esteem needs fulfilled when I post something on LinkedIn or
Instagram and receive a lot of likes and comments supporting me. Makes me feel
validated and gives me a sense of love and accomplishment. Lastly, I feel my self-
actualization needs realized when I utilize websites like Cengage and GitHub to
continue learning new skills and expand my knowledge. I use personal growth apps like
Calm to help with my personal growth and mental well-being. I find it interesting how our
needs have evolved and shows how addicted our generation is to technology.
Technology is something that can be positive but also can be negative. Overall, I
believe that Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is more relevant in today’s world than ever
before.
