The US military has brought forth a new area of national security that is called Social Cybersecurity. Social Cybersecurity is the use of technology to influence human behavior, social structures and political outcomes utilizing cyber means. Social Cybersecurity differs from traditional cybersecurity due to social cybersecurity targeting human beings and societies sometimes referred to as “cognitive hacking”. With the rise of technology across the globe, the need for cybersecurity is more pertinent than ever before. Social Cybersecurity is one of the new types of warfare that is being waged between rival nations. Social Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary approach as it utilizes psychology, political science and sociology and is a growing challenge. This type of warfare has the potential to be more effective and dangerous than traditional military operations as it can manipulate public discourse and social networks across borders at an accelerated rate without much risk. The cyberspace offers a pltform for anonymity and for agents to cause destabilization and mass panic from anywhere and anyone. Social cybersecurity is a growing issue and is something that needs to be understood and practiced today.
