What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
Cybercrime can be described as a type of crime carried out by using a computer and usually targets networked devices. This form of malicious cyber activity is harmful to public safety and our economic security. Criminal Justice can be described as the delivery of justice to those who have committed crimes. All to often, people will only consider typical crimes such as murder or robbery to be deserving of criminal justice. They fail to realize the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime.
As cybercrime has become increasingly relevant due to the increase in cyber threats, it is important to educate on the vast dangerous. Cybercrime should not be seen as miniscule action. Cybercrime can sometimes cause more damage than the ones individuals may typically consider to be the traditionally dangerous crime. Cybercrime is very dangerous as one million people are impacted by cybercrime everyday. The overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime begins when you think about who is necessary to combat these cyber threats. Law enforcement can be the police you see on the roads everyday but, it is not limited to that. As cybercrime is at an all time high, their has to be individuals that enforce and combat cyber threats. There are specific federal agents who are tasked at handling cyber threats and seeking some form of justice. Although, cybercrime is carried out through the internet, it is carried out by the same viscous criminals who deserve punishments. Also, on scale a robbery may only affect a couple hundred people, while a cyber attack can affect thousands, putting sensitive data at risk. The reach of these attacks can be vast, while the criminals usually are able commit this crime from their home. This overlap can also relate to how criminologist study why people commit crimes.
