As I am majoring in Pre-Med Bio I am also minoring in Biomedical Engineering. I chose this as my minor due to the close relationship that it has to me. When my sister was 12, she was diagnosed with end stage renal failure, which meant that neither of her kidneys worked. She has been on peritoneal dialysis since then. This major focuses on many different things, but the one that stuck out to me would be the development of 3D printing organs with the full ability of that organ that they are replacing. I believe that minoring in this would not only help me better understand how the body works, but it would also allow for me to have a chance to one day save not only my sisters life, but many others on top of hers. One interesting fact about this major is that it also focuses on building prosthetic limbs for people without legs or arms. One job that you can have with a degree in this field is becoming a cellular, tissue, and genetic engineer. Biomedical professionals who specialize in this area work on the microscopic level to find solutions for bigger problems. Concentrating on cellular activity makes it easier to understand the progression of diseases and develop ways to remedy or halt them before it’s too late. The classes that I would need to take consist of multiple different biomedical engineering classes and biology classes that I would spread out over the next 6 semesters that I am attending ODU. There are two academic advisors for this minor, Lisa Moser and Lee Belfore.
