Entry 11

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

As time goes on the line between criminal justice and cybercrime have become more and more blurred due to technology becoming more advanced. The evolution of technology has been able to also evolve crime to become more limitless due to the fact that it is now online rather than in person.. Cybercrime has become so widespread that digital forensics has been developed to help investigate any type of crime that has to do with technology. Digital forensics does help a little bit, but it is not always the most successful. Since the new technologies have been presented, the criminal justice field has had to reevaluate their process of categorization and how they decide to perceive crime in order to be able to call it a cyber crime. Since technology is still fairly new, there were not any laws that govern what is or is not a cyber crime or what the punishment of committing a cyber crime would be until 1978 in Florida became the first state to implement a computer crime law in the United States. This confusion in what a cybercrime is has also contributed to the discussion on what is and what is not considered appropriate behavior on a digital platform.Since technology has evolved to be an every part of your life, it makes sense that the criminal justice department needs to develop a more advanced cybercrime curriculum for students and develop better strategies to handle cyber crime. Since there have been so many high-tech developments in technologies it’s possible that cyber criminals can steal information without leaving a trace, which makes it hard for investigators to be able to find the guilty party. Cybercrimes such as that are more than just cyber crimes they also fit into financial and legal territory, which means those departments also need to find a way to punish against cyber crimes.
