How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance because cyber-deviance has a wide range of actions from web surfing for personal reasons, wasting time, cyber bullying, internet harassment, and disclosing a company’s confidential and sensitive information. It was proven that cyber-deviance has persisted through organizations even after serious action steps were taken. Cyber-deviance has multiple reasons why it is implicated in an organization’s productivity. There is a lot of research behind why cyber-slacking or cyber-deviance is evident. Cyber-deviance roots more from cultural and personal factors because most cyber deviants tend to lack some self discipline and have a commitment towards their job that leads to more cyber deviant behaviors. The consequences of cyber deviance perpetrators can be harsh enough that they even lose their job. Cyber deviances have continued to be an issue even after organizations have taken serious action steps to mitigate the risks. To help substantially mitigate the impacts of cyber deviance there should be a policy in place to underline the roots of cyber deviance and plan out a framework. Property and production deviances are the most two common. A production deviance consists of coming to work late, leaving early, stretching time, taking a sick day with proof, etc. All of these things can potentially impact the companies production. A property deviance consist of using company property for unwork related reasons, using a company vehicle for personal use, etc. The main reason for these deviants are believed to be the absence of good manners and personal values in an organization. Managers and supervisors need to do a better job of informing employees about the cyber-slacking policies in hopes of addressing the issue. This should emphasize the importance of productivity within the organization and should influence employees to not commit cyber deviances. As technology advances, the government will continue to put out laws that will attempt to prevent cyber crimes.
