Deviance in the technological world, and by extension the realm of cybersecurity, is seen much more than in in-person interactions due to the anonymous detached nature of the internet. In addition, when a person is in a cybersecurity work environment, they’re learning and gaining knowledge about the intricacies of cybercrime. They are learning the methods that cyber attackers use and how to recognize them. They are learning how to gain access to extremely sensitive information. If a person with mildly ill intentions goes into this environment and acquires this knowledge, they could potentially use said information for personal gain whether that be to use these methods themselves or aid others in doing so. A person could have a completely clean background and still be capable of this behavior, so it can be quite difficult to determine who would be doing so as well as how to prevent said people from getting hired into a cybersecurity working environment. Feelings of invalidation from an employer to the employee are very common as a workplace setting can be very taxing and demeaning. This, however, along with the knowledge on how to gain access to sensitive information and the anonymity of the technological environment, presents an opportunity for disgruntled employees to empower themselves through acts of deviance. They can access their employer’s or fellow employees’ sensitive, private information, inhibit the transmission of data, and disrupt the workforce out of frustration or self-gratuity. Another extremely dangerous act they could perform is gaining access to a company’s intellectual property through illegal methods. A company’s intellectual property is one of, if not their most, valuable asset, and stealing that information presents a plethora of options for the employee, competitive advantages for competitors, and numerous great losses for the company. The cybersecurity workplace is a breeding ground for deviance.
