Reflection Instructions
For this assignment, please reflect on the Fall 2023 semester, and your experience as a whole. For each question, please provide a few thoughtful, well constructed sentences.
Your First Semester
- Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.
- At the beginning of the semester I thought I could get past by not studying putting in just enough effort and time to get A’s And B’s, but now I see that is not the case for the past 4 weeks I have studying, utilizing my time well by getting all of my priorities done earlier in the day so I have the rest of the day to relax. I start emailing my professors asking for help and coming to the realization that they aren’t here to just teach, they’re here to help you in any way that you need because they have been here before.
- What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.
- My expectations were to complete this semester with at least a 3.5 gpa and do my assignments on time so later on when work is not being given I am not trying to play catch up. I didn’t not achieve my expectations, but I feel like it’s all about the process and trial and error, I see what methods do not work. I now understand the right amount of effort that is needed for me to achieve that.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
- I wish that I took getting a planner seriously, having a planner helps people in so many ways. During classes I see people take out their planners and write down information so they won’t forget when they leave the class and are also done for that day.
Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
- I’ll set different times for each different class and study the material for about 15-20 mins throughout the week. At the very beginning I wouldn’t even take the initiative to think about the class once I left.
- How have your study habits changed?
- Now I learned a study method that works for me since I am a virtual learner; I re-write the notes then I re-read the notes throughout the whole time up until the time for me to take the test for that specific class. Compared to the beginning of the semester I would cram the day before and I would only be able to retain about 60% of the information forgetting small amounts of information.
- Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.
- For the capture campus assignment I had various things on there that I didn’t know about at the beginning of the year. For example, I used the writing center to get help with an analytical paper and she helped me revise and give me writing tips that I used in future classes. They were extremely helpful and nice.
- What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?
- Next semester, I will focus on improving time management by breaking down assignments into smaller tasks and using active reading techniques to better understand complex material. I will also practice research skills regularly, seek early peer feedback, and implement immediate revisions based on feedback to enhance my efficiency and understanding throughout the semester.
Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
Parallel Plan
- This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
- Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?
- Exercise science and psychology: Exercise science provides knowledge on how to assess physical performance, prevent injuries, and help people recover from physical setbacks. I also watched a show on the science behind sports and that intrigued me to want to do it. Psychology, I found the things my professor was teaching us about our mind and how we think certain things very interesting.
- What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?
- Having a parallel plan helps you stay flexible and prepared for unexpected challenges, ensuring you don’t get stuck if things don’t go as expected. It allows you to pivot quickly, reducing stress and keeping you on track toward your goals.
- How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?
- Exercise Science and Psychology can both significantly enhance a major in Recreational Therapy by providing a deeper understanding of the physical and mental aspects of therapy. Exercise Science offers insights into how physical activity can improve health, mobility, and overall well-being, helping recreational therapists design more effective fitness and rehabilitation programs. Psychology helps understand the mental and emotional needs of clients, enabling therapists to tailor interventions that address both psychological and physical recovery, promoting holistic healing.
