Assignment Takeaway 5

            This assignment allowed me to reflect on all of the material throughout the course and what I’ve learned. It’s easy to finish up a class and not look back, so I think it was really beneficial to remember and relate the lessons to something more than just exams. In past courses if I hadn’t taken the time to contemplate the information then nothing really resonated with me. This assignment was personally relevant to me because it allowed me to examine the more or less prominent lessons that I understood, and then be able to interpret and relate it to my life or other courses I’ve taken. I’ve found that the best way I learn is if I find connections between classes or within my life, and this course helped me remember the importance of integration.

Assignment Takeaway 2

            Assignment two was more personally relevant than I initially believed it would be. Reflecting on the values that Americans hold on a day to day basis was very eye opening, because coming up with values and ideology that we hold in our culture was difficult for me to think of at first. After reading through the values listed, I decided to reflect on the cluster of values that included directness, openness, and honesty. In terms of my life I was able to identify with these values more than I thought I would, realizing that my life is very much based on being open and direct with people. Aside from relating to it personally I was able to recognize how different people from other cultures and countries deal with issues of honesty and directness. Growing up in an extremely diverse area, many of my friends are first generation Americans who’s families didn’t grow up in an environment of open and honest communication. Comparing my upbringing to theirs was interesting, because even though I always knew they had different relationships within their family’s, this assignment helped me to understand just how different they were.
