Background: Groups were instructed to analyze target audiences and the competition. Using literature and textbooks, groups were to determine some real or theoretical benefits and barriers of a public health problem.
Key study question(s): What are some real or theoretical benefits and barriers of teen drug abuse.
Method: Identify real/theoretical benefits of a public health problem by analyzing literature, text, and societal behaviors to improve health outcomes.
Findings: Media, peer influences, and cultural norms are a few barriers to stopping drug abuse. A few benefits of changing behavior include improved school performance, freedom from addiction, and avoiding criminal consequences. Drugs, vapes, and alcohol are all competitors of stopping teen drug abuse because they associate fun, social inclusion, and a escape from reality.
Recommendations: Finding alternatives and understanding the reason of teen drug abuse is important to stopping the behavior from being so prevalent. Creating programs and personalized methods can be key to changing behaviors.
Public health significance: Despite the fact that the majority of young people are in good health, some of them are more likely to engage in risky activities like high-risk drug use. Most individuals who satisfy the criteria for having a substance use disorder began using drugs or alcohol while they were teenagers or young adults. This helps us understand why and how to help stop this at a younger age.
