SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

In the sections of the modules labeled culture, it gave an insight to Spanish speaking countries. Some of the activities in culture included looking up Spanish speaking countries and gathering information about them.

The sponsors where very helpful when talking about their countries ,and their traditions. For instance the social media in hispanic countries. I feel like sharing personal experiences really helps when connections to other people. I would have to say in a way it humbled me. It made me realize how much I take for granted. In some Spanish speaking countries the have limited access to wifi or have places heavily censored. And how in Hispanic culture social media is used more as a way to keep up with friends and family verses in America where its more for entertainment. America also has easier access to wifi and have more freedom. When seeing something so common around you seem to forget that there are others around you who live a different reality.

Engaging in Communities

community engaging as well as community service is very important to building relationships and bonds to other people as well as cultures.

I do Volunteering when I can. The most frequent one I did was volunteering at my local youth center in the summer . I got to meet a lot of different kids who all came from different walks of life. At the end of the summer we hosted a talent shows and I was a little shocked to see all the dances and songs that came from other cultures. Community engagement helps open your minds to topics we never thought about before. It opens our eyes to problems others face different things.

Interpersonal Communication

Oral/audio activities not only test our Spanish listening skills. but also pronunciation. Reading activities helped us learn how to read correctly and how to properly write in Spanish. activities like these helped me in studying the proper material.

I at first had difficulties with my pronunciations but with listening to the examples on constraseñas vocabulary list helped me. I also would listen to my professors feedback on voice recording activities. When I had problems with writing I got help from the feedback my professor gave me on my writing activities, so I don’t forget accent marks. Overtime I saw my self making fewer and fewer mistakes resulting in better grades and less attempts. I feel that I was good in conjugation and reading activities. I essentially just study previous comments so I don’t make the same mistake twice. And try to practice by myself or with friends.

Presentational Speaking

There where speaking activities that mimicked actual conversations. Some of which that was practice for formal or informal conversations.

In those activities I did well in answering questions and even asking questions. I feel like activities when I was speaking with classmates did a lot to help with my speaking. I had some problems in which is I didn’t understand what was being said I didn’t retry to understand it. Next time I would make more attempts at something rather than just giving up.

Presentational Writing

I believe Writing mainly came into play when doing preparation for projects. That’s when we get the most feedback from our professor. I feel like presentational speaking also happened with projects.

Project-3-mi-horario

I feel like I didn’t struggle a lot with writing as time went on. Whenever I had questions I just asked my professor for help and they guided me through.

Interpretive Listening

I believe that most listening activities were more towards matching activities. Like matching the recordings to the unit vocabulary. They are very helpful and an easy way to learn.

Listening activities would help me with words that had accent marks. It would help to strengthen my listening skills swell as my pronunciation. The only issue I had was sometimes I struggled if the recording spoke too fast. When that happens I just keep registering and try to see if I can hear any common phrases from the unit. It really made me pay attention and really dissect what I’m listening to. If anything it taught me that it’s ok to ask someone to repeat themselves.

Interpretive Reading

There was a few reading activities. Some activities were done inside of class and some was done outside of class.

I remember an article I read in outside of class and it was interesting. For example I read an article online and it stated how much the social media usage in hispanic countries went up over the years. Also learning on what careers are the most popular. Another thing I read about when doing cultura was that in hispanic countries they don’t live on campus in college. Most still lives at home with their family. This helps them continue an education while still providing for their families. Doing out loud reading activities also helped with pronunciations.
