I signed up for this class last fall in the hopes that I could study within the realm of strategic communications. My bachelor’s degree only covers the realms of writing, reading, and interpretation, but not in the realm of strategic communication. I learned that one can’t afford to be shy when it comes to this field of study. Not meaning being prideful but more along the lines of confidence in what I can offer to the field. Since the start of the course I have been asked to step outside of my comfort zone and try new things. In the pen pal assignment, I had to reach out to several professionals, and with no background in the field, ask to begin a correspondence with them. Then to watch a sport (rugby) that isn’t in my general wheelhouse of knowledge. Both experiences, though frightening, were educational and ended up being really fun! The hardest part about taking this course would definitely be the limited Knowledge. When attempting to use strategic communication skills, it would be helpful to have some, or any. My previous major we learned how to write, which made the assignment portions (mainly all of them) of this course fairly easy. I enjoyed the creativity that came with the wordpress e-portfolio, as I had only been familiar with the site/program in accordance with writing articles for my prior organization, and even then all I’d be doing is writing a post here or there. Personally finding a penpal was a daunting task, I don’t know a great deal of sports professionals and thankfully I lucked out when I realized that one of the girls from my old organization was also a sports professional. Overall, I can say that I enjoy the hidden narratives of sports journalism, the part that goes beyond the training, skills, and stats, the part where the meaning lives. In sports you have to have a heart that drives and that’s what I’m looking for. Thank you!
