Throughout grade school, I was always very interested in technology but never found a specific niche within technology. I became very interested in cybersecurity technology after listening to a guest speaker at my high school. He explained cybersecurity in a way that intrigued me as I was searching for my niche within the technology world. I became very interested in cybersecurity because it’s crucial to protect our personal and sensitive information in today’s digital age. With the increasing number of cyber threats and attacks, it’s essential to stay aware and vigilant about potential vulnerabilities and take necessary precautions to safeguard our data. Cybersecurity technology plays a vital role in ensuring our online safety and protecting us from identity theft, fraud, and other malicious activities. As someone who values privacy and security, I believe that staying informed and educated about cybersecurity technology is crucial in today’s world. I need to stay as informed as I can in the ever-changing world of cybersecurity because I wish to protect the safety of myself and those close to me in the digital space.

The four majors offered by ODU that I will discuss are Network Engineering, Web Programming, Information Systems and Technology, and Database Administration. Network Engineering relates to cybersecurity by designing and managing security systems, ensuring that an organization’s network is protected from bugs, malware, and other cyber threats. This builds the initial framework for cybersecurity analysts to dive into and find any flaws in the system. Web Programming is essential for our modern era as the focus is on building new and innovative software. Cybersecurity analysts work to protect this software from outside threats. Information Systems and Technology can focus on using computer networks, hardware, and software to store and share digital information. Cybersecurity is important to ensure that the network being utilized by Information Systems is safe and secure for sharing digital information. Database Administration is linked almost directly with cybersecurity as database administrators understand where and how their data will be stored, how to back it up, and how to protect it from outside risks. This ties very closely with cybersecurity as they work to protect their data from outside threats as well. Cybersecurity teams have a large focus on this as well with an emphasis on limiting possible security flaws. Many of the technology majors at ODU have close connections with Cybersecurity as it is deeply rooted in each major in one way or another.
