Blog 10: Reflection

This course was a very exciting and excellent course. I learned so many different things that pertained to many scenarios and real-life application. I was able to understand people’s thinking, how their decisions were affected by outside attractions, how we can build relationships with other people, making connections, and how discrimination and race play a role in many things. Before starting this course, I thought I knew many things about social psychology already due to previously taking psychology courses and looking at outside resources before taking this class, such as shows, documentaries, etc. But I was able to dive more in-depth and find the reasoning for every little detail on our interactions in different situations.

This photo is from The Lion King scene when “Circle of Life” plays. This song gives me a reflection on life, and I somehow correlate it with social psychology, how everything we’ve learned is based on this class.

Blog 8: Mating Battleground

A relationship between a man and a woman isn’t as perfect as it seems to be. There will always be ups and downs, arguments, flaws, disagreements, and just little things that doesn’t always go how we want them to

There are many ways how men upset women in a relationship. From personal experience and what I have observed from other relationships, some men say simple phrases or words that they don’t think mean anything but to their significant other (or s/o for short) iit means a lot. One phrase I can think of is men saying “if you want to” but their s/o would much appreciate them saying “I want you to”. It just gives them reassurance that they are actually wanted, but us men actually do but don’t think much about it. Although we think it doesn’t mean too much, words play a significant role.

One way that I know that drives crazy sometimes is women not giving enough space. Some women, not all, that I’ve seen have always been “clingy” meaning that they always want their s/o around, always responding to their text within a manner of seconds, and not giving enough. Men will want to go out and hang out with their friends, and sometimes their s/o would rather them hang out together instead of going out. This is one way this’ll upset men. In a healthy relationship, it is important to understand each other and communicate boundaries and what they want in a relationship.

Blog 7: Self-Regulation & Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence and Self-Regulation are alike and different in their own ways. Emotional Intelligence is having control, expressing, and being attentive of one’s emotion with themselves and other people. Self-Regulation is more of being able to have control of ones emotions. In a way, it intertwine’s with emotional intelligence in away that they both deal with an individual being able to recognize their own emotion and having some sort of control over it. To me, emotional intelligence means many things. Not only does it mean being able to control, express, and being attentive of your own emotion, but it also means being able to read other people’s emotions during a situation and being able to develop some sort of emotional connection not with themselves. To me, an example of displaying EQ is being able to connect with people you just met. Meeting people and making a new friendship out of it is a way I am able to display this sort of EQ. For example, the EQ test I took I scored a 62. A score of 50-75 showed that you are very approachable, being able to make connection with different kinds of people, being able to recognize emotions before they stir up. This is a great display of having a strong “Emotional Intelligence”.

Blog 6: Dangerous Ways Ads See Girl

When watching this Ted Talk, I was dumbfounded by the way women in ads were presented and treated. In the past, women were limited to many things including jobs. A big way they could make money was to becoming a model, but being a model meant being sexualized and dealing with sexual harassment that was dealt upon them. This headed its way into how women were sought to as or expected to look. Women in ads were Photoshop to look a certain way to the audiences liking such as being thin, looking young and a certain way. This has led to women in society having issues about themselves and feeling very negative, They would develop low self esteem because they didn’t look a certain part, and it has hurt many women. Men too are also being expected to act a certain way. Many men are expected to be “buff”, strong, and have personalities that pertain to being a tough individual. These ways of how people see both men and women are how ads gain their customers and buyers, which is very dangerous.

This ad was made in 1958 where a man is seen doing all the hardships while his wife is seen to just be pouring his beer and supporting him. This was common back then where men would do all the “labor work” as women weren’t seen as capable.

This ad was also made by Budweiser and also had the similar role as the ad above showing women to help support their husbands and being a stay-at-home wife, which was very common.

This ad was made by BMW promoted their used cars with the slogan “you know you’re not the first”. This is comparing how even though a BMW car has been used, it looks the same as a new. This is also implying how “women” are used by sexualizing and objectifying them.

Blog 5: Communicator Credibility and Attractiveness

Athlean X

This first advertisement is from a training system/program called “Athlean X”. Athlean X is based on a workout program created by a certified physical therapist and strength coach named Jeff Cavaliere, whose goal is to help individuals meet their fitness goals. We know this is a credible source because not only does his physique show his qualifications of being able to help others, but he is also very knowledgeable in the area of fitness, whether it be to obtain bigger muscles, become more explosive, become a better athlete, lose fat, or just simply live a healthy lifestyle. Jeff being a Physical Therapist and strength coach helps solidify his client’s trust in helping achieve their goals.

This second advertisement is from Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia that anyone has access to. On this page, it is based on the American Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War itself did occur, but the reason that this site is not credible is because it is from Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a credible source because at any given time, the information can be edited, added,  or removed. Wikipedia uses secondary sources to gain its information. Because of this, some of the information on this page can’t be trusted and is not credible.

Walmart “Black Friday” sale

This last advertisement is an attractive sale for walmart. It shows a Black Friday sale where many electronics are at a lower price. I personally found this attractive because electronics that we use/could use that we want/need are at a lower price than their retail price. This is a very effective advertisement that brings people to want to buy more electronics due to the lowered price.

Blog 4: Exam 1

Throughout this whole process, I’ve learned how to clearly try to understand more of the vocabulary and being able to apply it more. I felt that I could’ve done more when it came to trying to apply it the situations. I also could’ve had more time to study as I did study within only a few days before the exam. The tips of looking up the correct answer online to help clarify it will help me a lot in trying to decipher each term and apply it to the situation.

Blog 3: Music and Relationships

Music to me is an important part of my life. Not only is it something to listen to daily, but it is something that has brought me and many of the people in my life closer together. When I listen to music, I don’t listen to one genre of music. I have a plethora list of songs that I love to listen to. Sometimes it depends on my mood, and sometimes I just want to jam out. I feel that music jump started my way into getting closer to the friends I have. We are able to sing the songs we love together, converse about the meanings of lyrics, have small debates of which songs are better, and just have a great time! Not all people I’m close with who have similar music taste share the same values and ideals. Although this is the case, we still love to jam out to the music we love.

My Soundtrack:

Me: Loving is Easy (Rex Orange County)

Blog 2: “Student-Athlete”

Ever since I was in grade school, I wouldn’t call myself the perfect student, but I would say I’ve always been decent and proficient in what I did and studied. In High School, I will say I didn’t work as hard as I should’ve and didn’t do as much work as I could’ve. At times, I slacked and did the bare minimum and accepted a grade as low as a B or B-. As long as I got a B- in a class that was, “difficult”, I was satisfied. It was not until I came to college and realized how much of a factor my grades will play in my future. Because I realized how much of a factor grades play, I strictly aim for As and try not to get below a B+. I believe that I’m a hard worker, but do have my times of laziness and procrastination.

Not only has the importance of my grades played a role in me understanding how much it can affect my future, but also playing sports in High School and even playing club in college has helped me develop the sensation of hard work. In organized sports, I lived by the motto “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Although I was proficient in my studies at times, I was never perfect and still had to work as hard, maybe even harder to achieve high goals. When I set my goal to something and want to achieve it, I put my foot in the ground and go after it. I was able to translate striving to be great in athletics into striving to be great for my future career. In relation to my self-efficiency scale, I scored a 29, which is at the mean. I was able to show that most of my scores came from being able to adapt in certain situations.

The reason I chose this image was to show the balance between being a student and also an athlete. I was able to strive in both aspects of my life, and still do at the collegiate level, playing Club Rugby for Old Dominion.

Blog 1: Expectations

Social Psychology is a very unique branch of psychology that deals with how social interactions and social as a whole can have either a big or small effect on a single individual. Social Psychology will be a very beneficial course when it comes to real life applications. Because of taking this class, I know I will be able to understand why people tend to do certain things differently, why people make the choices they make, how society has a big effect on a person’s emotional state and choices and how social construct is what it is today.

My expectations of this course is to be able to understand and interpret how every little thing around us has some effect on not just others but also me. I hope to gain the knowledge of being able to explain society’s influence on others. Some strategies that I intend to use in order to be successful in this course is not only studying course material but being able to apply what I have learned to outside scenarios and situations.

“Psychology Major Tweet”

This tweet that I found on twitter/meme a while ago is a funny representation and reflection on not just the first and second chapters but in Psychology as a whole. I choose this image as it depicts how there is a reason to how people act and choose what to do/or say.
