SPAN 102

Exploring Culture

Somethings that helped me to get a better understanding for the different cultures was some of our projects in class. For example from unit 8 we learned about food and what type of foods that some Hispanic culture like to eat through the day.

Learning about the Hispanic culture helped me to get a better understanding of how each culture have any different ways and life styles from mine. It helped to show me how different but the same in some ways that my culture and theirs are the same. I felt that our practices helped me to see how great the world is and how some cultures might think that our culture is weird to them. It showed me that if I was to ever go somewhere to see the Hispanic culture personally that I would feel like i’m in a different world because it would be so different for me but the people around me would feel like it’s a normal day.

Engaging in Communities

I would say it is important to engage in your community so that you can help your community. When helping your community your not just helping others but yourself in the future too. I feel that when you help out the people around you that they are they are more likely to help you as well when the times comes and you need their help. When being engaged in your community you are not in the dark of what is happening around you and you are having real conversations with others other then texting or calling. I feel talking to others helps so you don’t lose your people skills because you are so used to talking to people through the phone and you start to find it weird or even worried you feel weird doing it.

Reflect on your experience and participation in these communities. Include artifacts such as photos, audio/video clips, etc.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad was when I would talked to someone that I picked to talk to about a topic for around 15 minutes in spanish. I felt that the people I talked were very kind and understanding which I found comforting. I wasn’t that well with the speaking projects but the people from talkAbroad spoke slow and really tried to help me understand what they were telling or asking me.

I feel that I have grown from the talkAbroad because it helped me to have a full conversation with someone like I would if I was speaking english. It helped to make me thing of what they were saying to me and try to come up with a answer to answer back to them. I would try and go over some questions that might be asked and so questions that I could ask them and I feel that it helped me so I wouldn’t be so lost when talking to them. I found the workbook helpful as well to help to put us to think of somethings to say and to make us think of if in some ways are our cultures similar.

Presentational Speaking

Some projects that I did that I recorded myself speaking was about my family in unit 6 and how to cook something in unit 8. I explained how you would make it and you need to make the meal I was showing how to make.

I would say that from those two projects I have grown by learning new vocabulary and grammar. When speaking about my family I explained what they are like and what they look like. For the meal project I made a tuna salad and I showed how to make it while saying each step I was doing. The speaking projects helped to overcome not knowing how to say some words and helped me to know how to say basic things that I would need to know when speaking to someone who might not know english but understand spanish. I feel if I would have practices with someone about what I was going to say that I would have done better on them so I feel that if I had to redo them I would try and to that other then practice solo.

Presentational Writing

In my SPAN 102 class I have done some writting projects through the semester. Some of the writting projects that I have done this semester was talking about a sport I recommend in unit 7 and about a sickness of my choice.

Unit 9 illness writting project

I have grown from our writting test and projects by growing my vocabulary and understanding what I am writting about. I feel that when I write over and over what I will be writting or talking about in my writting project that I have a better understanding of the words meaning then I would by just reading along with someone. I enjoyed doing the sickness project because I was able to find out new facts about the sickness I picked also learning how to write what I have learned in spanish.

Interpretive Listening

Ways I would say that I used my listening skills in this class would be when listening/ watching to my classmates vidoes on lingo. In class we also would read out loud or listen to our professor read an acticle to the class.

When listening along to someone else read an acticle I feel that it helped me hear how a word should be said that I might have said wrong if I was to read it alone. We have read a couple of acticles about mental, physical health, meals and physical actives. When listening to the acticles I would learn new facts/ information when connecting the spanich words to the english meaning.

Interpretive Reading

Readings that I have done in this class would be reading my classmates writting projects to comment, reading the actical and even reading when doing homework on lingo. When in any class I feel that when doing any assignment there will be the need to read in so way.

I found reading and speaking harder then writting or listening. I still have a hard time understanding the sounds and pronunciation or some words. When reading and trying to translate it back to english based off the way it is written can be confusing to me still but I feel that I have grown form last semester in SPAN 101. I would try to read ahead of my classmates to see if what I throught the text said was the same that they said and I feel that helped me through the reading part of the class.
