As we have learned there is no direct path to a career in the field of cyber security. Cyber security is an interdisciplinary study which means, it can be viewed through the lenses of multiple disciplines, and those ideas are integrated for a more comprehensive understanding of the matter. In the realm of cyber security there are a variety of functions and roles need to be filled that require the knowledge and skills acquired from different degrees, programs, or certificates. Thankfully here at Old Dominion there are an abundance of majors that relate to cyber security.
First, we have Criminology and Criminal justice which has a growing need in the cyber security field due to the rise of cybercrime. Everyday individuals fall victims to internet crimes and attacks such as online fraud, cyberstalking, and identity theft. We need those minds to determine why and what motivates individuals or groups to commit these cyber offenses to deter them.
If one is more interested in creating and establishing policies and legislation regarding cyber security and cybercrime Old Dominion also offers a Public Administration and policy major. There are laws that protect us online every day such as the Federal Wire Fraud Statue or Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Both laws protect and establish consequences for those guilty of online fraud.
Next, business majors are also a necessity in the cybersecurity field for many roles. It is important to know how much money should be allocated to an organization’s cyber security program. Cyber security is a financial issue just as much as a social issue. Millions of dollars have been lost due to online fraud. These cyber events also harm brand reputation, which can deter future sales and stakeholders.
Lastly, what good are all these safeguards and money spent to ensure security if there is not someone that can effectively and clearly deliver the information in a way that is understandable for operations and management. Communication majors are needed to help deliver technical jargon in an easier language to digest. It is important for all associates from operation to management to understand the baseline of cyber security expectations to protect assets and reputation.
