Maslow’s Hierarchy of need is the theory that as our simplest needs are met, we shift focus towards more complex higher-level needs. As the internet and technology become more integrated into my day to day, it aids in meeting my needs from basic to complex. I use applications downloaded on my cellphone to order my groceries, pay rent, and utilities. This is how I meet my basic needs for food, shelter, and warmth at the lower physiological level. My Ring camera provides security and surveillance for my home, this technology aids in meeting my needs for safety. As my basic needs are satisfied, I can branch out and start focusing on needs such as having a sense of belonging. I use social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to stay connected with friends and family close and far. Social media is also a self-esteem boost every now and then; getting hundreds of likes from friends and family on a picture or video can bring temporary feelings of self-fulfillment. Moving to the very top of the scale, self-actualization is the idea of reaching one’s full potential. I am nowhere near there yet, but I do use the internet and technology to inch towards reaching my full potential every day. Completing my associates online was a goal I accomplished that made me a feel a little closer to getting to where I want to be.
