Journal Entry #4

One of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is that digital technology has become a psychological need. It depends on what I need to do when I have no internet access. For example, if an assignment is due, and I cannot use the internet to complete the assignment, I would feel anxious because I am running out of time to turn the assignment in. However, if I don’t have anything important that requires the Internet, I would probably feel bored since most things I do involve the Internet. Maslov’s next idea is that if our digital needs are met, the next level of need would be security needs. When I get a virus, my first reaction is to determine how it got onto my computer and then figure out how to remove it. The third part of Maslov’s theory is that social media is used by many to promote a sense of belonging. The more friends we have on Facebook or followers on other mediums, the more we feel we belong. I do not feel this way because I use social media to see what is happening in the world or to see funny videos to send to my friends. Maslov’s final idea is that social media can positively and negatively influence an individual’s self-esteem. I do not believe social media has ever influenced my self-esteem. This is because I have never made any posts or done anything other than view other people’s posts. Therefore, I never had to deal with mean messages that were directed at me in any way.
